1999-W $5 Gold Eagle Unfinished Dies Error with W PCGS MS69
In 1999 The United States Mint made a mistake when minting some of the $5 and $10 bullion coins when they used dies containing a “W” mintmark. Mint Marks are reserved for proof and other specialty coins and never for. The dies were also not fully treated leaving these bullion coins with a cameo finish.
The error was not found until 2000 and the Mint guesses there are approximately 6000 coins affected by the mistake. Grading services and population reports show there are far fewer coins then stated.
With the addition of a “W” mintmark, the reverse and obverse are the same classic design.
