2018 2oz Silver Wedge Tailed Eagle Proof Piedfort NGC PF70 UCAM John Mercanti Signature
Designed by the 12th US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti and struck by Perth Mint. Each coin has been certified by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) and are sealed in a black core holder with an Australian Flag hand-signed Mercanti label. Coins arrive in a Perth Mint presentation case and with a Perth Mint numbered certificate of authenticity.
Each coin has been carefully struck in a thick piedfort planchet. Piedfort means double the thickness of a regular coin of the same weight and metal. Specially manufactured using polished dies and selected planchets (blanks), to give the desired mirror effect; they are typically struck at least two times or more.
The obverse depicts the profile of the oldest reigning Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. Also included are the denomination and the country of issue. At the base of the Queen’s profile are the initials ‘IRB’, these are for the obverse designer Ian Rank-Broadley.
The reverse was designed by John Mercanti and features the full family of Australian Wedge-tailed Eagles—the baby Eaglet in the nest with mother, while the father Eagle glides in from afar. The year, weight, purity and Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark are included on the reverse.
In Mercanti’s words, he never like the family of Eagles the U.S. Mint put out on their gold coin. He had drawings that were never used by the U.S. Mint, so when Perth asked him to do a family of Eagles for the Wedge Tailed, he was happy to go back and design with the proper modifications for our release.
Each Australian Flag NGC label has been hand signed by John Mercanti.
