In 2020, the Royal Australian Mint struck its very first .9999 fine silver bullion series, Beneath the Southern Skies! This series was intended to pay tribute to the life of the Australian coin designer, Stuart Devlin, who is considered to be the Father of Australia's modern currency. Imagery used in the new series is an homage to Devlin, as it is based on some of his original sketches dating back to 1964 — and 2021 marks its second year!
The reverse design of the coin features the continent of Australia with the Southern Cross constellation surrounded by a grid patterned background representing lines of longitude and latitude. To set this coin apart from the others in the series, a small platypus detail can be seen on Australia. Additionally, the inscriptions of the coins specs, "1 Dollar" and "1 oz .9999 Silver" can be seen on the reverse face of the coin.
The obverse displays the classic effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by that same grid pattern that is seen on the reverse of the coin. Inscribed above the effigy is the arched text "ELIZABETH II" and "AUSTRALIA 2021."
