Leonardo da Vinci completed work on his world famous masterpiece The Vitruvian Man in 1490. The drawing, which is in pen and ink on paper, depicts a male figure in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and simultaneously inscribed in a circle and square. The drawing and text are sometimes called the Canon of Proportions or, less often, Proportions of Man.
Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was a German mechanical engineer and physicist, who, on November 8th, 1895, produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range known as X-rays or Röntgen rays, an achievement that earned him the inaugural Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
In 2021 the Cook Islands, a self-governing island country located in the South Pacific Ocean, issued a remarkable coin to commemorate these two hugely consequential achievements! Struck at the famous CIT mint, these legal tender coins issued by the Cook Islands have a $5 denomination and are limited to a total worldwide mintage of just 999! Each X-Ray Vitruvian Man Ultra High Relief Colorized Proof weighs 1oz and is struck from .999 fine silver! The Vitruvian Man is depicted on the reverse, while a colorized X-Ray image of the drawing is featured on the obverse along with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
