The Athenian Owl tetradrachm is arguably one of the most influential ancient coins in numismatic history. This magnificent antiqued silver coin, dedicated to the Athenian Owl, is the second release of the Coin Invest Trust (CIT) Numismatic Icons Series. The owl was associated with the goddess, Athena, very early on in archaic artworks and was often depicted perching on her hand. Because of its strong connection with the goddess, the owl evolved into the Athenians’ own icon and graced a large variety of coins in ancient Greece, such as the tetradrachm from as early as the 5th century BC.
The obverse design features a crowned, right facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II encircled by the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II," "5 DOLLARS," "COOK ISLANDS" and the date of issue "2021." The reverse design depicts a modern rendition of the ancient Athenian Owl design. Like the ancient coin, a crescent moon and sprig of olive hover above the wise creature's back. In the open space to the lower right of the owl, the coin is inscribed with "CI," which represents Cook Islands.
