The American Silver Eagle, first introduced in 1986, is hands down the world’s most collected coin. The obverse design of the Silver Eagle features one of America’s most iconic numismatic achievements: Adolph Alexander Weinman’s Walking Liberty, which depicts Lady Liberty, enveloped full-stride in the American flag. In her left hand are branches of laurel and oak in exquisite detail, more apparent than ever thanks to advancements in design and minting process.
The original Silver Eagle reverse design featured another historic numismatic work: John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle. Mercanti, perhaps the most prolific coin designer in history, was the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, serving in that role from 2006 to 2011. While the Heraldic Eagle is Mercanti’s most famous design, he is credited with a remarkable 40 issues struck by the U.S. Mint.
Mercanti's original design which was featured on all Silver Eagles from 1986 until 2021. The design on the new Silver Eagle reverse, known as Eagle Landing, incorporated the work of designer U.S. Mint AIP Artist Emily Damstra and engraver Michael Gaudioso, a U.S. Mint Medallic Artist.
This stunning mirror-finish 2022 Proof Silver Eagle is struck in .999 fine silver and features the ‘W’ mintmark, indicating it was struck at the U.S. Mint's West Point Facility in West Point, NY. This Silver Eagle also features reeded edge variation for additional security, which the Mint first introduced in 2021.
