First struck in 1986, the American Silver Eagle is the undisputed number one most collected coin in the world. The obverse of the Silver Eagle features one of America’s greatest numismatic designs: Adolph Alexander Weinman’s legendary Walking Liberty, depicting Lady Liberty in full-stride, enveloped in a flowing American flag. Her left hand holds branches of laurel and oak in remarkable detail, the genius of which is now more evident than ever before thanks to technological advancements in design and minting process.
Until July 2021, the reverse design of the Silver Eagle featured another historic American design: John Mercanti’s famous Heraldic Eagle. Perhaps the most prolific coin designer who ever lived, Mercanti served as the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint from 2006 to 2011. While the Heraldic Eagle is certainly Mercanti’s most famous design, Mercanti is credited with a remarkable 100 coin designs worldwide!
In 2021, the U.S. Mint retired John Mercanti's original design which had been featured on Silver American Eagles struck from 1986 until 2021. The new Silver Eagle reverse, known as Eagle Landing, was designers by U.S. Mint AIP Artist Emily Damstra and engraved by U.S. Mint Medalic Artist Michael Gaudioso.
