First introduced in 1986, the American Silver Eagle has become the world’s most collected coin. The Silver Eagle features one of America’s most important numismatic achievements on its obverse design: Adolph Alexander Alexander Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty, depicting Lady Liberty, enveloped full-stride by a flowing American flag. In her left hand you can see branches of laurel and oak in remarkable detail, now more apparent than ever before thanks to technological advancements in design and minting process.
Until July 2021, the reverse design of the Silver Eagle featured another iconic American numismatic work: John Mercanti’s famous Heraldic Eagle. Mercanti, perhaps the most prolific coin designer ever, served as the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint from 2006 to 2011. The Heraldic Eagle is certainly Mercanti’s most famous design; however, he is credited with a remarkable 100 coin designs worldwide!
In 2021, the U.S. Mint retired John Mercanti's original design which was featured on all Silver American Eagles from 1986 to 2021. Big shoes to fill indeed, but collectors were not disappointed! The new Silver Eagle reverse, known as Eagle Landing, incorporated the work of designer Emily Damstra and engraver Michael Gaudioso.
