First introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1986, the Silver Eagle is the world's #1 collected coin. The obverse design of the Silver American Eagle boasts one of America’s most lauded numismatic achievements: Adolph Weinman’s Walking Liberty, which depicts a striding Lady Liberty, enveloped in a flowing American flag. In her left hand you can see the branches of laurel and oak in exquisite detail. And that detail is more visible than ever before thanks to some remarkable advancements in design and minting technology.
Until July 2021, the reverse design of the Silver American Eagle highlighted another iconic numismatic work: John Mercanti’s famous Heraldic Eagle. Mercanti, served as the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint from 2006 to 2011. Though the Heraldic Eagle is certainly Mercanti’s most famous design, he is credited with an unsurpassed 100 coin designs worldwide!
In 2021, the U.S. Mint retired John Mercanti's original design which was featured on all Silver American Eagles struck from 1986-2021. Big shoes to fill indeed, but collectors have not been disappointed! Known as Eagle Landing, the new Silver Eagle reverse incorporated the work of designer Emily Damstra and engraver Michael Gaudioso.
