First issued in 1997 as an extension of the American Eagle Bullion Program, the American Platinum Eagle is the first and only platinum coin issued by the United States Mint. The Platinum Eagle traditionally has very low mintages. However, it is an easy way for savvy collectors to take advantage of a precious metal investment. Proof Platinum Eagles feature various designs, and the 2024 W $100 Proof Platinum Eagle, featuring the "Liberty Spreads" design, is the latest release in the series.
The 2024 W $100 Proof Platinum Eagle is struck with 1 ounce of 99.95% platinum at the West Point Mint and features a special mirror-like proof finish with the "W" mint mark. The coin is also certified by NGC as PF70 Ultra Cameo in Advance Releases pedigree and comes with the NGC US Mint Designer label, hand-signed by the coin's obverse designer—Donna Weaver.
The obverse features the "Liberty Spreads" design and is the fourth design in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution Platinum Proof Coin Series. Each coin in the series depicts a phase in the lifecycle of the oak tree as a metaphor for America's growth as a nation that values freedom. The "Liberty Spreads" design focuses on the Right to Assemble and depicts a branch of a fully grown oak tree spreading its leaves.
The reverse features America's national bird—a majestic eagle in flight, with its wings spread and an olive branch in its talons. The eagle and olive branch represent the strong symbol of peace and freedom.
