This ancient coin holds the distinction of being the first mass-circulated coin in history. Because of that, it’s also one of the most famous ancient coins.
The obverse (heads) side of the coin features the Greek goddess Athena in profile. She is shown facing right and wearing a helmet with a palmette and three olive leaves. The reverse (tails) side of the coin features Athena’s familiar, the Owl of Minerva, standing to the right with its head facing forward. On its left side is an olive spray and a small crescent moon. On its right side, the Greek letters Alpha, Theta, and Epsilon mark the coin as “of the Athenians”.
