By Act of Congress, and in honor of the 125th anniversary of Thomas Alva Edison’s invention of the light bulb, the United States Mint produced silver commemorative coins. The law states that the designs of the coins “shall be emblematic of the light bulb and the many inventions made by Thomas A. Edison throughout his prolific life.” These coins were offered in both proof and uncirculated condition. The law also authorized the United States Mint to produce not more than 500,000 silver one-dollar coins.

This coin is part of the Mint Engraver Series Master's Collection, honoring John Mercanti's 41 designs struck by the U.S. Mint. Each Master's Collection coin has been graded PCGS perfect 70 and holdered with the John Mercanti signature flag label in a unique colored slab signifying the Mint location at which the coin was struck.
