With only 16 known examples, the 1804 Silver Dollar is one of the rarest coins in American numismatics. Known as the "King of American Coins," it has one of the most fascinating stories in American coinage.

Although never struck for circulation, the legendary 1804 Silver Dollar design is faithfully recreated as the fourth release in the Best of the Mint collection. Limited to 15,000 sets, each 24-karat gold coin is paired with an original companion medal struck in .999 fine silver.

Gold Coin Design

• Obverse – Originally designed by Robert Scot (U.S. Mint Chief Engraver, 1793-1823), Liberty is depicted facing right with flowing hair bound by a ribbon, surrounded by 13 stars representing the 13 original colonies.
• Reverse – Adapted from the Great Seal of the United States, a heraldic eagle with raised wings bears a Union shield while holding an olive branch and a bundle of 13 arrows beneath a constellation of 13 stars shining through the clouds.

Silver Medal Design

• Obverse – A youthful depiction of Liberty faces left with flowing hair swept by the wind, creating a graceful expression of freedom and optimism.
• Reverse – An eagle soars over the Earth, emerging through the clouds as the rising sun illuminates the horizon.

Best of the Mint

For the nation’s 250th anniversary, the United States Mint created the Best of the Mint series featuring five classic designs selected from an original group of 21 candidates spanning more than two centuries of American coinage. The final selections were determined through public input and consultation with curators of the Smithsonian’s National Numismatic Collection. The original coins were carefully studied and photographed before being recreated. 

The 1804 Silver Dollar only exists due to a misunderstanding at the U.S. Mint. Although records documented silver dollar production in 1804, the dollars struck bore the date 1803. Mistakenly believing the final silver dollars issued were dated 1804, the Mint struck a small number of coins in 1834 as part of presentation Proof Sets sent to foreign dignitaries.
