The 1879 George T. Morgan Pattern Set brings together four historic designs from one of America's most celebrated engravers. Originally struck in limited quantities to test new designs, metals, or concepts, pattern coins were experimental pieces never intended for circulation. Morgan's original 1879 patterns are among the rarest examples of his legendary design, with only 9 to 11 known examples of each denomination.
Produced by XceptionalMint™ under the creative direction of former U.S. Mint engraver Michael Gaudioso, this four-coin set recreates Morgan's original designs in .999 fine silver with a True Proof™ finish—a proprietary finish inspired by nineteenth-century U.S. Mint Proof coins. As a nod to the year that the original patterns were created, this set has a maximum mintage of 1,879.
Set Includes:
Perhaps the most famous piece in this pattern set is the 10-cent denomination. Unlike the other three coins, the Morgan Dime features a reverse with the denomination ONE DIME surrounded by a wreath, rather than the heraldic eagle.
The original 1879 Morgan Dime (Judd-1586) is also the rarest of the four patterns, with only nine known examples.
Developed by XceptionalMint in collaboration with the Commonwealth Mint, True Proof is a proprietary finish designed to recreate the appearance of nineteenth-century U.S. Mint Proof coinage.
Unlike modern Proof coins, with heavily frosted designs, True Proof incorporates multiple layers of frosting to capture the look of historic Proofs. As the coin is turned, light dances across the varying surfaces, revealing intricate details and contrasts reminiscent of the original nineteenth-century strikes.
Certified by NGC in PF70 Ultra Cameo, each pattern carries the Advance Releases designation, reserved for select coins made available before the U.S. Mint’s official public release.
Each coin also features The Pattern Collection Label, hand-signed by former U.S. Mint Medallic Artist Michael Gaudioso and engraver of this pattern set.
XceptionalMint collaborates with former mint designers, engravers, and directors to bring forward designs and ideas that were never realized during their time at the Mint. By blending hand-crafted engraving with advanced minting techniques, the goal is to create coins that push beyond traditional limitations.
