Many consider Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 High Relief Double Eagle to be one of the most beautiful coins ever struck by the United States Mint. Of the high-relief variety, about 12,000 were originally produced, with an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 surviving.

For the fifth and final Best of the Mint, Saint-Gaudens’ celebrated $20 design is recreated in 24-karat gold for only the second time. Limited to 15,000 sets, each gold coin features the Liberty Bell 250 privy mark and is paired with an original companion medal struck in .999 fine silver.

Gold Coin Design

• Obverse — Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty strides forward carrying a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with rays of the rising sun and the U.S. Capitol in the background. It bears the original Roman-numeral date MCMVII and features the Liberty Bell 250 privy mark, commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.
• Reverse — A powerful eagle soars above rays of the rising sun with its outstretched wings and forward flight conveying strength and freedom, while the emerging sun symbolizes a new day for the nation.

Silver Medal Design

• Obverse — A close-up, contemporary interpretation of Saint-Gaudens’ original Liberty figure, with flowing hair, a raised torch, and an olive branch across her chest.
• Reverse — Echoes Saint-Gaudens’ original reverse with a more detailed eagle whose wings form an American flag soaring above the rising sun with lightning bolts between its rays.

1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20

At the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt, renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens set out to transform American coinage in the early 20th century. Inspired by the sculptural depth of ancient Greek coins, Saint-Gaudens created an ambitious $20 gold piece featuring Liberty striding forward and an eagle soaring above the rising sun.

The original high-relief design proved too demanding for the U.S. Mint to mass-produce, requiring numerous strikes. As a result, the 1907 High Relief Double Eagle circulated for only a single year, with a mintage of around 12,000 pieces before the relief was reduced for subsequent issues.

Best of the Mint

For the nation’s 250th anniversary, the United States Mint created the Best of the Mint series featuring five classic designs selected from an original group of 21 candidates spanning more than two centuries of American coinage. The final selections were determined through public input and consultation with curators of the Smithsonian’s National Numismatic Collection. The original coins were carefully studied and photographed before being recreated.
