The 1916 W 10C Mercury Dime Gold Coin + Companion Silver Medal is the first release in the United States Mint’s Best of the Mint collection. It features one of the most legendary designs in American numismatics in .9999 fine 24-karat gold and an original modern interpretation in .999 fine silver.

Selected through a public poll with expert review conducted by the Smithsonian’s National Numismatic Collection, the Best of the Mint collection features five of the most popular designs in United States history.

Gold Coin Design

  • Obverse – Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Winged Liberty design representing freedom of thought, featuring Liberty in a winged Phrygian cap. Includes the Liberty Bell “250” privy mark commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.
  • Reverse – A bundle of rods (fasces) symbolizing strength through unity, paired with an olive branch representing peace. One of the most recognizable and enduring reverse designs in classic American coinage.

Silver Medal Design

  • Obverse – Liberty depicted in both defensive and offensive positions, representing the strength and determination of the American people during the Mercury Dime era from 1916 through 1945
  • Reverse – The sword continues seamlessly from the obverse to the reverse, where rays emerge from its tips as a symbol of hope following conflict. Imagery representing the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl honors the endurance and resilience that defined a transformative period in American history.

Best of the Mint

For the nation’s 250th anniversary, the United States Mint created the Best of the Mint series featuring five classic designs selected from an original group of 21 candidates spanning more than two centuries of American coinage. The final selections were determined through public input and consultation with curators of the Smithsonian’s National Numismatic Collection. The original coins were carefully studied and photographed before being recreated.

Originally issued from 1916 through 1945, the Mercury Dime became one of the defining achievements in American coin design. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the Winged Liberty motif symbolizing freedom of thought is one of the most recognizable and celebrated images ever produced by the United States Mint.
