The 1916 W 25C Standing Liberty Quarter Gold Coin + Companion Silver Medal is the second release in the United States Mint’s Best of the Mint collection. It features one of America's most celebrated classic coin designs in .9999 fine 24-karat gold and an original modern interpretation in .999 fine silver.

Gold Coin Design

  • Obverse – Hermon A. MacNeil's original design depicting Liberty walking through the "gateway of the country." Adorned with 13 stars representing the original colonies, the gateway frames Liberty as she turns to look over the shield in her left hand while holding an olive branch in her right.
  • Reverse – An eagle in flight surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies. One of the most recognizable reverse designs in American coinage, the soaring eagle symbolizes freedom, strength, and the nation's enduring spirit.

Silver Medal Design

  • Obverse – Liberty extends an olive branch as an offering to an eagle soaring in the distance while carrying a shield adorned with 50 rivets representing the states and 13 stripes honoring the original colonies.
  • Reverse – Close-up of an eagle's talons clutching the olive branch offered by Liberty on the obverse, continuing the narrative of peace, unity, and strength. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies surround the eagle's talons.

Best of the Mint

For the nation’s 250th anniversary, the United States Mint created the Best of the Mint series featuring five classic designs selected from an original group of 21 candidates spanning more than two centuries of American coinage. The final selections were determined through public input and consultation with curators of the Smithsonian’s National Numismatic Collection. The original coins were carefully studied and photographed before being recreated.

Originally issued from 1916 through 1930, the Standing Liberty Quarter is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful coins ever produced by the United States Mint. Designed by Hermon A. MacNeil, the original Type 1 design was struck for only a brief time before being modified in 1917, making the 1916 issue one of the most desirable key dates in American numismatics.
