The American Gold Eagle was first issued in 1986 as the official gold bullion coin of the United States of America. Under the American Eagle Bullion Program, the coin was authorized by Congress as a method for investors to conveniently and cost-effectively purchase precious metals. The U.S. Government guarantees the weight, content, and purity. Each coin is struck from 22-karat gold (91.67% purity) with small amounts of alloy added for durability, ensuring they resist scratching and marring.

Coin Design

Obverse - The obverse design features a rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' celebrated Double Eagle design. The updated design subtly enhances the portrayal of Lady Liberty, capturing her strength and elegance as she strides forward. She carries a torch symbolizing enlightenment and an olive branch, a timeless emblem of peace.
Reverse - The reverse, designed by Miley Frost (Busiek), features a male bald eagle flying toward a nest where a female eagle and their eaglet reside, representing strength, unity, and family.

Miley Frost (Busiek) Signature

This 1987 $10 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle has been hand-signed by Miley Frost (Busiek), the designer of the Type 1 Gold Eagle reverse. Each coin is graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) in perfect-strike MS70 and slabbed with the exclusive U.S. Mint Designer Series label.

The American Gold Eagle series, introduced in 1986, is the official gold bullion coin of the United States and is one of the most respected gold bullion coin programs in the world. Recognized for its grace and beauty, the American Gold Eagle is struck from 22-karat gold with four different sizes: 1 oz ($50), 1/2 oz ($25), and 1/4 oz ($10), and 1/10 oz ($5). The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gauden's Walking Liberty iconic Walking Liberty design, considered one of the most beautiful U.S. coin designs ever minted. For the 35 years, the reverse showcased Miley Busiek's Family of Eagles design, until it was replaced by Jennie Norris' highly detailed bald eagle portrait in 2021.
