The America the Beautiful Quarters Program was signed into law on December 23, 2008, by President George W. Bush. Like the wildly popular State Quarter Program, it highlights the beauty and diversity of the United States by featuring a National Park or National site from each of the 50 states, the 5 U.S. Territories, and the District of Columbia.
56 Unique Designs
A total of 56 unique designs were issued from 2010 to 2021, representing 48 National Park service areas, 5 National Forests, 1 Wilderness area, and 2 National Wildlife Refuges. Each design was carefully reviewed by a committee and approved by the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury before production.
Classic George Washington Obverse
The obverse of each America the Beautiful Quarter features a restored version of John Flanagan's classic 1932 George Washington portrait created for the Washington Quarter.
5oz Silver Collector Edition
Several versions of the America the Beautiful Quarters were issued, including clad, proof, and silver proof, but the most desirable are the 5oz .9999 fine silver collector editions. To produce these large-format coins, the U.S. Mint imported German-made, high-speed Graebener coin presses capable of producing 1,100 metric tons of pressure, ensuring sharp, detailed designs.
Great Smoky Mountains
This issue celebrates the Great Smoky Mountains, which stretch across North Carolina and Tennessee. Named for the morning fog that often drapes its forested peaks, the park features rushing streams, waterfalls, and historic log structures. It is home to black bears, elk, deer, and more than 200 species of birds, making it the most visited national park in the United States.
