The America the Beautiful Quarters Program was signed into law on December 23, 2008 by then President George W. Bush. Like it's predecessor, the wildly popular State Quarter Program, The America the Beautiful Quarters highlight the beauty and diversity of the United States by featuring a National Park or National site from each of the 50 states, the 5 U.S. Territories and the District of Columbia.
A total of 56 different designs adorned the reverse of the America the Beautiful Quarters which were released by the United States Mint between 2010 and 2021. Design proposals for each America the Beautiful Quarter reverse were reviewed by a committee and chosen by the United States Secretary of the Treasury. The sites included 48 National Park service areas, 5 National Forests, 1 Wilderness area, and 2 National Wildlife Refuges.
While the reverse design of each issue is unique, the obverse of each America the Beautiful Quarter is the same. The obverse design of each quarter features a restored version of the portrait of George Washington created by John Flanagan for the 1932 Washington Quarter.
Several versions of the America the Beautiful Quarters were issued including clad, proof and silver proof but none of them had the same impact on the collecting world as the 5oz .9999 fine silver collector's editions. To produce these amazing America the Beautiful Quarters, the United States Mint had to import German-made, high-speed Graebener coin presses which produce 1,100 mertic tons of pressure.
Block Island National Wildlife Refuge, about 12 miles offshore from Rhode Island, was established in 1973. There are a total of five refuges in Rhode Island. Block Island is notable because it's home to over 70 distinct species of songbird.
