The Medal That Took 30 Years—and Was Never Struck

Commissioned in 1819 to honor the Allied forces that defeated Napoleon, Pistrucci’s Waterloo Medal became a masterwork of classical engraving. But despite decades of work, the dies were never used due to their massive size and the Mint’s fear of cracking them. Until now.
