Few names in numismatics command as much respect and acclaim as that of John Mercanti, the legendary 13th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. Mercanti is known for his iconic design on the American Silver Eagle, the poignant portrait of the Statue of Liberty on the Platinum Eagle, and dozens of other U.S. coin designs.
While Mercanti is widely recognized for his tenure and portfolio at the U.S. Mint, Mercanti is credited with over 60 designs struck on non-U.S. coinage. Let's take a look at some of John Mercanti's most notable international designs.
Also known as the Eaglehawk or “Wedgie”, the wedge-tailed eagle is the largest Australian bird of prey, and has long been revered as a symbol of strength, courage, and freedom. The success of Mercanti’s design with the American Silver Eagles inspired the Australian government to hire Mercanti, eventually leading to the Eagle in Flight design of 2014 Australian Gold and Silver Bullion coins.
Since 2014, a variety of designs have been released for the Wedge-Tailed Eagle coin. The 2016-2017 coins, for instance, featured the magnificent bird perched on a tree branch, while the 2021 coins showed the bird capturing a snake in its talons.
Another of Mercanti’s international contributions is the design for the Royal Canadian Mint’s Silver and Gold Maple Leaf coins. The striking effect of the maple leaf design is a testament to Mercanti’s attention to detail and expertise in coin engraving.
Canadian Maple Leaf coins were produced in 1979, with varying artists commissioned to redesign the maple leaf on the coin’s reverse through the years. Mercanti was one of these artists. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
John Mercanti’s iconic creations have become more than symbols of currency. His commitment to sharing his knowledge and conducting workshops on key topics related to numismatics showcases his dedication and perpetuation of the craft, and his legacy is a shining example of how artistry and craftsmanship can elevate the ordinary into the extraordinary.
