First issued in 1986, the American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States Mint and the flagship of the American Eagle program. Struck in 1 oz of .999 fine silver with a $1 denomination, it is one of the most widely collected modern silver coins and often serves as the foundation of many U.S. coin collections.
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design, first introduced in 1916 and carried forward on the series. The original reverse, created by John Mercanti, features the Heraldic Eagle that defined the series from 1986 through mid-2021 and is now referred to as the Type 1 Silver Eagle.
In 2021, the U.S. Mint introduced the Type 2 Silver Eagle, designed by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso. The updated reverse depicts a bald eagle in flight carrying an oak branch, marking the first major design change in the series since its 1986 debut.
Collectors can choose from American Silver Eagle coins for sale across bullion, proof, burnished, and reverse proof finishes. Certified American Silver Eagle coins graded by NGC and PCGS are available in a range of release designations and popular signatures. These coins are widely represented in modern U.S. coin collections, reflecting their role as a core part of modern U.S. coin collecting.
